We Dropped Phones in Cases From $12 to $85 — The Cheap One Won

There's a persistent belief in the phone accessories world that price equals protection. Pay more, get safer. It sounds reasonable — until you actually start dropping things and watching what happens.

We put that assumption to the test. Five cases, five price points ranging from $12 to $85, five identical phones, and a whole lot of concrete. Here's what we found — and what it means for how you should spend your money.

The Lineup

We kept the test as apples-to-apples as possible. All five cases were designed for the same phone model. We sourced them from major US retailers — Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and one direct from a brand's website. The cases broke down like this:

For phones, we used five units from the same model batch — confirmed identical builds, same software version, same screen glass condition going in. We weren't testing the phones; we were testing the cases.

The Drop Protocol

We ran three drop scenarios that reflect how real people actually break their phones:

  1. The Pocket Slip: Four feet, flat concrete, screen-side down. This is how most phones die — slipping out of a pocket or off a lap.
  2. The Counter Drop: Three feet, tile floor, corner impact. Kitchen and bathroom drops, basically.
  3. The Fumble: Five feet, concrete, random angle — simulating that panicked moment where you bobble the phone and it goes sideways.

Each case went through all three drops. We documented screen integrity, case deformation, and whether any structural damage occurred to the phone chassis itself.

What Actually Happened

Case A ($12) surprised everyone in the room. The TPU flexed on impact in a way that distributed force effectively. Screen survived all three drops. The case itself scuffed and one corner showed compression, but that's exactly what you want — the case absorbing damage instead of the phone. Function over form, and it worked.

Case B ($22) performed solidly. The dual-layer design did what it claimed. Corner reinforcement was visibly effective on the tile drop. A small crack appeared on the case body after the five-foot fumble, but again — that's the case doing its job. Phone was fine.

Case C ($38) — the military-grade certified one — held up well in the flat drop but showed more chassis flex than expected on the corner impact. The phone survived, but we noticed a hairline stress mark on the case near the volume buttons. Not a failure, but not a standout performance for a case wearing its certifications on its sleeve.

Case D ($55) is where things got uncomfortable. The slim profile, which is the whole design point of this case, meant there wasn't much material between the phone and the floor. The pocket slip drop resulted in a cracked screen protector (not included, we added identical ones to all phones for consistency) and a visible impact mark on the phone's aluminum frame. The phone survived, technically, but it took real damage.

Case E ($85) recovered its reputation somewhat. The proprietary impact material genuinely absorbed the five-foot fumble better than anything else in the lineup — that test was its strongest showing. But in the everyday pocket slip and counter drop scenarios, it was comparable to Case B at $22. You're paying a significant premium for performance that only shows up in the most extreme scenario.

The Features That Actually Matter

After watching all fifteen drops, some patterns became really clear about what separates cases that protect from cases that just look like they protect.

Raised edges work. Any case where the screen sits slightly recessed from the edge of the case will dramatically reduce direct screen contact on flat drops. This is non-negotiable. If a case's screen is flush with the edge, walk away.

Corner reinforcement is real. Corners are where energy concentrates on impact. Cases with visibly thicker or structured corners — regardless of what material they're made from — consistently outperformed cases with uniform thickness.

Slim profiles have a ceiling. There's a physical limit to how much protection a thin case can offer. If you want slim, you're making a trade. Know that going in.

Certifications are not guarantees. Military-grade drop ratings (MIL-STD-810G, if you've seen that sticker) refer to a specific testing protocol that doesn't always map to real-world drops. It's not meaningless, but it's also not a promise.

Material matters less than geometry. Whether a case is TPU, polycarbonate, silicone, or a hybrid doesn't determine performance as much as how the case is shaped and where its bulk is distributed.

So Should You Just Buy the Cheap One?

Not exactly. The $12 case won this particular test, but it also showed more wear after three drops than anything else. Longevity is a separate question from single-impact performance. If you're someone who drops their phone regularly, that cheap case may need replacing more often — which could close the cost gap over time.

The real sweet spot in our test was the $22 to $38 range. You get meaningful construction improvements over the budget tier, real corner protection, and you're not paying for brand cachet that doesn't translate to better drops.

If you're spending $55 or more, make sure you're buying it because you want something that feels premium in your hand — not because you think it's going to save your phone in ways a $25 case won't. Based on what we saw, that's mostly not true.
