Let's start with a quick exercise. Go to your phone's settings, find the location or privacy section, and look at how many apps have been granted location access. If you're like most smartphone users in the US, the number is going to be somewhere between surprising and genuinely alarming. Weather apps, food delivery, retail apps, games, social media — they're all in there, many of them set to "Always" or "While Using," collecting your location data on a schedule you never agreed to and pulling on your battery in ways most people never think about.

Location services and GPS usage are one of the most underestimated contributors to battery drain and long-term battery degradation. Not because a single location ping is catastrophic — it isn't — but because of the cumulative, continuous nature of how modern apps use location data. Over months and years, the impact on your battery's health is real and measurable.

How Location Services Actually Work (And Why It's More Complex Than You Think)

Your phone doesn't just use GPS to determine your location. It uses a layered system: GPS satellite signals, cell tower triangulation, Wi-Fi network positioning, and Bluetooth beacon data. Each of these methods has a different power cost.

GPS is the most accurate and the most power-hungry. Acquiring a GPS fix — especially in an area with poor satellite visibility, like inside a building or in a dense urban environment — requires sustained radio frequency activity that draws significantly more current than most background processes. In testing scenarios, active GPS acquisition can draw 150–300mA or more, which is substantial when your phone's baseline idle draw might be 20–50mA.

Wi-Fi and cell tower positioning are less accurate but much cheaper in terms of power. The problem is that many apps don't just want a rough location — they want GPS-level precision, which means they're waking up the GPS radio on a regular basis even when you're not actively using them.

The "Always On" Permission Is Worse Than You Realize

When an app has "Always" location permission, it can request your location at any point — foreground, background, even when the screen is off. Some apps are responsible with this. Many are not.

Apps that use geofencing (triggering notifications when you enter or leave a specific area) are particularly aggressive. To maintain geofence accuracy, they need to check your location frequently. A retail app with geofencing might be pinging your location every few minutes while you're out running errands, even though you haven't opened the app in weeks.

On top of the direct battery drain, there's a secondary effect: location activity often triggers network activity. Your phone gets a location fix, then sends that data somewhere — which wakes up the cellular or Wi-Fi radio. That radio activity generates heat. What the Long-Term Numbers Look Like

Let's talk about what this actually means for your battery over time. Lithium-ion batteries degrade faster when they experience more charge cycles and more heat stress. Every unnecessary background process that drains your battery is forcing more partial charge cycles, and every thermal event accelerates capacity loss.

Estimates from battery health researchers suggest that phones with aggressive background location activity enabled across 10+ apps can experience 8–15% more capacity degradation over an 18-month period compared to phones with location access tightly controlled. That's the difference between a battery that holds 85% of its original capacity after a year and a half versus one that holds closer to 75%.

That gap matters. It's the difference between your phone comfortably making it through a full day and you hunting for an outlet by mid-afternoon.

The Settings Most Users Never Find

Both iOS and Android have granular location controls that go well beyond the basic on/off toggle, but they're buried in ways that feel almost intentional.

On iPhone: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. You can set each app to Never, Ask Next Time, While Using the App, or Always. But there's more — scroll down past the app list and tap "System Services." Here you'll find location access for things like Significant Locations (a log of places you visit frequently), Location-Based Apple Ads, and iPhone Analytics. Most of these can be turned off with zero impact on functionality you actually care about.

On Android: Go to Settings > Location > App Permissions. You'll see apps divided into categories based on their access level. Look specifically for apps set to "All the time" — these are your biggest ongoing drains. Android also has a "Location History" setting tied to your Google account that runs independently of individual app permissions.

The setting that surprises most people: the precision toggle. Both iOS and Android allow you to grant apps "approximate" location instead of precise GPS coordinates. For apps that don't genuinely need to know your exact block — weather apps, for instance — approximate location is perfectly functional and dramatically cheaper in terms of battery impact.

A Practical Audit You Can Do Right Now

Here's a straightforward process to clean up your location permissions without losing any functionality you actually use:

  1. Revoke "Always" from any app that isn't navigation or safety-related. Food delivery apps, social media, retail — none of these need your location when you're not actively using them.

  2. Switch weather apps to approximate location. They don't need GPS precision. A zip code is fine.

  3. Turn off Significant Locations and Location-Based advertising in your system settings. These provide no user benefit and run continuously.

  4. Audit once a month. New app installs often default to requesting location access during setup. It's easy to tap "Allow" without thinking about it.

  5. Check your battery usage stats after making changes. Both iOS and Android show per-app battery consumption. If a location-heavy app was a significant contributor before and drops off after you restrict its permissions, you'll see it clearly.

The Bigger Picture

Your phone's battery is a finite resource. Every unnecessary background process, every gratuitous location ping, every bit of heat generated by a radio that didn't need to be active — it all compounds. Location services are particularly insidious because they're invisible. You don't feel them running. You don't see a notification. You just slowly notice, over months, that your battery doesn't last quite as long as it used to.

Taking 15 minutes to audit your location permissions is one of the highest-return battery health investments you can make. It costs nothing, it's reversible, and the benefits accumulate every single day.
